For a crib, the only bedding you need is a firm mattress that fits snugly inside the crib, fitted sheets that wrap securely around the mattress and a sleeping bag. A waterproof mattress protector is also highly recommended to keep the mattress clean.

There’s no definitive number of crib sheets you need, but most parents find that 3–4 sheets is about right. Having a couple of extra sheets means you’ll always be prepared for those unexpected spills that can occur between your usual changes.

To prepare your baby’s crib, start by placing a mattress protector over your mattress, followed by a fitted sheet that wraps tightly around the sides. Then, insert the mattress so that it fits snugly inside the crib with minimal gaps between the frame. Lastly, if you’re using a blanket, make sure it’s tucked in securely and is no higher than chest level.

We recommend changing crib sheets once a week, and immediately after any accidents. Having a set schedule can be useful, but you should always check for stains and odours between washes and change as needed.
